Xinhua News Agency, Beijing, May 25 (reporter Wang Jingyu, Xia Liang) in the semi-final of the Chinese men’s basketball professional league (CBA) from 2022 to 2023, the runner-up Guangsha team of last season lost to Liaoning team 2:3, missed the finals. Miao Shoushou, general manager of Zhejiang Guangsha Basketball Club, said in an exclusive interview with Xinhua News Agency recently that competing for the championship is always the goal of the team, and it needs to constantly accumulate and accumulate on the way to winning the championship.
There are regrets and highlights
Looking back on the 2022-2023 season, Miao Shoushou used the word “twists and turns. In the final stage of the 2021-2022 season, Hu Jinqiu and Zhao Yanhao were seriously injured, and Guangsha team greatly reduced its strength in the finals. Before the start of the 2022-2023 season, Hu Jinqiu, who was about to recover from the injury, had a fracture of the fibula in the teaching competition with Shandong team and rested for another 3 months. In the first regular season, Cummings, a small foreign aid, broke his palm. Therefore, in the first stage competition, Guangsha’s men’s basketball winning rate was only about 50%.
In the second stage competition, Sun Minghui’s waist injury appeared again, and the team’s record was still around 50%. After the resumption of the main away game in the third stage, Guangsha lost to Tianjin in men’s basketball, and soon lost to Tongxi team in three overtime matches, then lost to Guangdong team by two points. However, after that game, Guangsha team won nine-position and made a smooth advance to the playoffs.
Miao Shoushou said: “Maybe it is because of those twists and turns that we have the following nine-position wins and can go so far in the playoffs.”
Although Guangsha team failed to reach the finals like the previous season, it also made some breakthroughs, which made Miao Shoushou feel gratified.
“When we played in Shanxi on December 8, I told the team members that Guangsha had never won in Shanxi since its establishment. If you want to break through history, you must prove that you are the best tonight. Later, the players worked hard to win. Yes (Guangdong) Hongyuan lost in the first game, won at home in the second game, and went to Hongyuan in the third game. I told the team members again that we didn’t win at Hongyuan’s home court. History was used to break through. Since you went up, you must have the determination to win. Later, you also saw this game. We broke Hongyuan’s record of not losing the first four in 20 years.”
The championship was made
In the CBA finals of the 2021-2022 season, Guangxia, who lacked Hu Jinqiu and Zhao Yanhao, lost to Liaoning men’s basketball at 0:4 men’s basketball. In the semi-final of the 2022-2023 season, Guangsha won the match point 2:1 men’s basketball and led more than 10 points in the fourth game. However, the Liaoning team played a climax of 29:10 in the third quarter, reversing and winning.
Miao Shoushou said frankly that at that time, the team suddenly “cut off power” and missed the opportunity to eliminate opponents, but this may also be part of the process of impacting the championship.
He said: “There must always be such a process. Liaoning also came here like this. It was only six or seven years before he became a woman. Beijing and Xinjiang (before winning the championship) it also lasted for many years. Champion is always our goal, but it needs to be accumulated and accumulated. I believe the team will get better and better.”
Miao Shoushou revealed that during the off-season, the club would send four or five members of the first class, Wang Xinrui and Zhao Jia to Serbia for special training to help them improve their technical and tactical abilities and accumulate competition experience, improve more stably. Previously, the club exchanged Ji Zhuo and Zhao Jiayi to Qingdao men’s basketball in order to give them more opportunities to play.
For two consecutive seasons, Guangsha men’s basketball experienced a loss due to injuries later in the season. Sun Minghui and Hu Jinqiu averaged 39 minutes and 37 minutes respectively in the 2022-2023 season. Miao Shoushou said that the team has made a lot of efforts in the aspect of injury prevention, and the playing time of several core players has a lot to do with their desire to win and their sense of responsibility.
“We also want more people to rotate and go on top, but we still can’t do it now. Like Hu Jinqiu and Sun Minghui, we sometimes want to change him. He said that I still have physical strength and I can fight. Zhu Junlong had a ball cramp. After changing him, he pressed (Mo) twice a little. He said, ‘Nothing, I have to go on ‘. Our players are very cute, and the cohesion of the team is still relatively good. We also see our own shortcomings and will try our best to improve them, but good things like cohesion and fighting spirit will continue.”
Youth training keeps walking
Miao Shoushou still remembered that on January 1, 2008, he went to work in Guangsha club. Ye Xiangyu, the general manager of the club at that time, asked him to catch the youth training work of the club, he was asked to train two members of the national youth team within five years. Miao Shouben said “I’ll try”, and Mr. Ye told him “if you don’t try, you must do it”.
Therefore, Miao Shoushou began to look for good seedlings all over the country. Hu Jinqiu was the most important “treasure” dug by Miao Shoushou “. In 2012, Miao Shoushou heard that there was a good child in Korla, Xinjiang. After asking for instructions from the club leaders, he flew to Xinjiang and won Hu Jinqiu among four or five basketball teenagers.
At that time, Hu Jinqiu also received an invitation from the Xinjiang club and Tsinghua University. Miao Shoushou did not ask Hu Jinqiu and his family to make a decision immediately, but left the decision to them. After Hu Jinqiu’s mother took him to these three places for trial training, she soon decided to sign a contract with Guangsha men’s basketball.
“His mother is very straightforward. What makes me feel gratified is that we fulfilled our promise. We originally imagined that after two or three years of training, we would send him to the country shonentai, and it took only one year.” Said Miao Shoushou.
Among the “three young people in Guangxia”, Sun Minghui came to the team at the earliest time. He came to the team shortly after Miao Shoushou began to be in charge of the youth training.
“He was the youngest and the shortest when he came, but he was older than other players. He played others around when he broke through.” Miao Shoushou recalled, “I told him very early that you can’t be the captain with your temper, but you can be the leader of the team.”
After Hu Jinqiu, Sun Minghui and Zhao Yanhao, Zhu Junlong, Zhao Jiaren, Zhao Jiayi, Ji Zhuo and other Guangxia youth training players also gradually grew up, he has performed well in the CBA league in the past two seasons.
Miao Shoushou said that there are two important reasons why Guangsha youth training can achieve certain achievements. One is that investors attach great importance to it and there is no upper limit for investment in youth training. The other is that as a private club, the decision-making mechanism is relatively flexible.
“Our investors come to play ball with small players every weekend. They don’t mind being scratched by them during the confrontation. They also care about the life of young players at ordinary times. Although it is hard for the club to do youth training, it is more fun.” Said Miao Shoushou.
Among the top four teams of the CBA league in the 2022-2023 season, Zhejiang DOUBLE HEROES and Shenzhen men’s basketball are both famous for attaching importance to youth training, and Liaoning men’s basketball, the defending champion, is also enjoying the previous bonus of youth training. In Miao Shoushou’s view, more and more teams attach importance to youth training is a good thing for the development of CBA league.
“Qingdao has also got up in recent years, and they also attach great importance to youth training. I told their general manager that at least there was no need to worry about buying players.”
After 15 years of deep cultivation and training, Miao Shoushou’s biggest feeling is that the treatment of grass-roots coaches is not proportional to their contribution, and they are the most important factor in the process of training young players.
“The grass-roots coaches in the position of Taki have low salary and no preparation. They are not as good as players playing wild balls in income. I hope this situation can change.”
